Sunapee’s varsity golf team began their season with two away matches this past week. Sunapee is returning six players from last year’s third place team, but with the loss of top scorer Jackson Scheele as well as the realignment of a number of larger schools into Division IV, a return to the top-tier will be challenging.

The Laker’s first match was held at Blackmount Country Club in North Haverhill, New Hampshire on Wednesday, August 24th.  Sunapee came in third place with 32 points trailing  Woodsville High School’s 71 points and  White Mountains Regional High school’s 46. In high school golf, four points are awarded for a birdie, three points for a par, two points for a bogie, and one point for a double bogie.  Six players are eligible to compete for each high school, and the top four scores for each high school are counted for the team total. High School matches are nine holes. Senior Nick Pollari was the high scorer for Sunapee with 13 points, followed by Mia Cahill with 9, Sam Gaudette with 7, and Sawyer Willis with 4.

On Monday, August 29th, Sunapee Golf traveled to Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Gilford, New Hampshire for their second match of the season. The Lakers came in 4th with 36 points, with Conant High School having 69, Gilford High School having 59, and Littleton High School having 42. Nick Pollari led Sunapee with 13 points, followed by Charlie Gallant with 9, Mia Cahill with 7, and Sawyer Willis with 7 as well.

Morgan Summerton, Junior, is a 3 year member of the golf team. She also played on the team during her sophomore year where Sunapee got 3rd in Team states. I asked Morgan some questions about the season as of right now.

“What are your thoughts on how your season is progressing so far?”

“Well I think it is going pretty well, the first match I only got two points, in the second match I got 7, so there is definitely progress being made.”

“Do you think this season will go well?”

“We can always have hope. I think if we keep practicing as a team and playing well individually, we can do a lot better and hopefully get some more wins, comparatively we did better in the second match individually.”

“What are your thoughts on the golf team's progress throughout this season?”

“We have definitely gotten better as individuals which can only help the growth of the team.”

Charlie Gallant, a senior, has been a 2 year member of the golf team. He was also on the team when they took home 3rd at Team states. I asked him the same set of questions about the current golf season.

“How do you think you have been playing so far?”

“Honestly, I haven’t been playing well lately, and I have some things to work on which I'm focusing on throughout the season. Short game has been a struggle to find consistency with. As well, Slowing down and finding methods behind each swing would be beneficial.”

“What are your thoughts on the team this year?”

“We are definitely a younger group, with only two seniors it brings forth a sort of big brother attitude towards the team. Especially with players playing for the first time and the two seniors can help them out with smaller things.”

The golf team is looking to turn things around in their match Thursday, August 1st, at 3:30 at Farmington Golf Course in Farmington, New Hampshire. Let’s Go Lakers!
